THE PROCEEDS of a charity football match between superheroes and Disney princesses have been presented to a children’s foundation which sends children with cancer on holidays.

Paul Bainbridge and Tracey Harrison arranged the game at Battle Green Field, between Pelton and Pelton Fell, near Chester-le-Street, in aid of Sara’s Hope Foundation.

A cheque of £3,368 was presented to charity office manager Carol Bennett.

Mr Bainbridge’s niece, five-year-old Lilly Hartley, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in June 2012 aged three. She had several operations and she seemed to be doing well but relapsed in December 2013.

She was well enough to visit Sara’s Retreat in Crete in June this year but on her return home, recent scan results showed that the tumour is still growing, she’s undergoing further treatment.

Sara Hoburn, who is the inspiration behind Sara’s Hope Foundation, died of a rare form of colon cancer at the age of 16 in 2001. The charity opened a holiday retreat in Crete in June 2011, offering respite for children and young people with cancer and their families.
