LIVING Streets is promoting walking to school among pupils at Chester-le-Street’s Park View School.
Changes to the junction at the Northlands Roundabout have made the journey to school safer for youngsters at its North Lodge site.
Living Streets is encouraging Year 7 and 8 pupils to walk with a project to get them covering the equivalent of the Coast to Coast route, 145 miles, in three days
They used exercise equipment including treadmills, cross trainers, stepper machines, step boxers and pedometers over three lunchtimes and beat their target.
Head Iain Veitch said:“The Walk to School' initiative is proving more popular than we ever imagined it would, with students queuing to use the equipment at lunchtime and all thoroughly enjoying getting fit.
“It is a great idea which actually shows, contrary to popular belief, that young people enjoy exercise when given the chance to do it.”
Andrew Dufton, a Year 8 pupil, said “It was fantastic, I had loads of fun on the machines and wish we could do this every lunchtime.”
