A LONG-awaited new supermarket has been officially opened in Birtley town centre.

The Morrisons store has been built in Durham Road and is creating 137 new jobs as well as ending several years in which the town was without a major retailer.

Store general manager Ian Brocklehurst said: “We were overwhelmed by the support shown for the store and the new team and I’m delighted that we have created so many new local jobs.

“We’re looking forward to playing an active role in the community."

The former car park site was developed with Gateshead Council, which sees the store as playing a key role in supporting the town centre.

Andrew Marshall, service director of economic and housing growth for Gateshead Council, said: “We are delighted to support the opening of this brand new store in Birtley.

"The regeneration of the town centre is bringing new facilities for local people, more retail choices and new jobs.

“It’s great to see that the new store has already had such a positive impact on the area’s economy by providing employment opportunities for local people.

“It is hugely gratifying that 66 per cent of those employed at the new Birtley store were previously unemployed.

“We’re sure that it will have a lasting impact too, acting as a major draw to ensure shoppers continue choosing Birtley for years to come.

“This will be a catalyst for Birtley town centre, encouraging people not only to do their food shopping locally but also to stay in the town for their other needs."
