AN INITIATIVE to bring together police and young children is expanding fast.

Durham Police’s Mini Police project started last year and sees children supporting officers at community events.

Around 250 children have been involved so far and more are joining soon.

The scheme recently expanded to Chester-le-Street and Sacriston and will soon encompass Edmondsley and Nettlesworth.

Acting Sergeant Norman Foster said: “This project is a great way for police and communities to work together.

“The interaction we have with the children helps break down barriers and gives them the opportunity to become actively involved in local events. It’s also great fun too.”

The Mini Police will soon be attending events including the Durham Dash, Dogwise and potentially Bikewise.

A/Sgt Foster said: “The project is going from strength to strength.

“We’ve even had contact from the National Volunteer Police Cadets programme. Devon and Cornwall Police want to look at our Mini Police and see how they could use parts of this model in a national programme.”
