A COMMUNITY centre is hoping to attract new members after undergoing a facelift.

A cafe and IT suite have been opened at The Haven Community Centre in South Moor, near Stanley.

The cafe is open from 10am to 4pm every weekday and offers hot and cold food such as pies, fish and chips, jacket potatoes, sandwiches and salads.

In the future, South Moor Partnership, which runs the centre, is hoping to offer Sunday lunches.

Computer facilities include six PCs and six laptops available free of charge and a free course to help people learn how to use them, which is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm.

The partnership offers job seekers help and advice on CV writing and how to find work.

Colin Henderson, partnership chairman, said: “There are a lot of unemployed people here in South Moor and I do not think many realise what kind of facilities they have here at The Haven.”

“We hope what we are offering here will pull the community together.

“With the cafe open now people can come in a see what is on offer and have a chat as well as a fresh and affordable meal.”
