A CHARITY has launched its first depot store in the region in Stanley town centre.
People queued outside the new Salvation Army shop, in Clifford Road, ahead of the opening on Thursday (January 8).
The organisation has transformed the former decorating store in the town over the last few weeks ahead of the launch.
Area manager Anthony Cummings said: “This is a unique shop for us, it is a new concept.
“It is a sales shop, but it is also a depot to supply other shops in the area, so we will be looking for lots of donations.”
The Salvation Army has about 20 outlets in the region, stocking a range of goods including clothing, household goods, books, CDs and DVDs.
It is looking for more donations as well as volunteers to help the four staff who work there.
Money raised helps towards work with homeless people, drug and alcohol rehabilitation units, family support and tracing services.
The opening was done by Major Amaro Pereira, the Salvation Army’s regional director for evangelism.
He said: “We are providing a new service for the community and it is a great privilege to be here.
“This is not just a place people can shop but they can come here to talk and get support.
“It is another expression of the work we do.”
