A COUPLE have called for a reduction in the bureaucracy surrounding the renewal of parking permits, after being left virtually housebound by their wait.

Darlington pensioner Marjory Jardine, who suffers from a number of serious ailments, is unable to walk more than a few paces and has relied on a blue badge for a degree of independence for about 15 years.

The badge allows Mrs Jardine’s husband John, 77, to take her to hospital appointments, on outings and errands.

Without it, she said she would be unable to park close enough to access most venues and as such, would be left housebound.

A recent operation that left Mr Jardine temporarily unable to drive meant the couple failed to notice the expiration of the blue badge and must now wait at least 20 days for a replacement – if 78-year-old Mrs Jardine is still deemed eligible.

In the interim, they are unable to use disabled parking spaces and could be fined if their old blue badge is displayed.

The couple believe reminder letters and an interim measure – such as a temporary blue badge – could help others in their situation.

Mr Jardine said: “We’ve got to go to the town hall for a meeting to see if Marjory is still eligible and it will be about 20 days after that to get the badge.

“I asked what to do in the meantime and was told to pay for parking but that’s not the issue – this is restricting her independence.

“Marjory is severely disabled and in constant pain and this is a great inconvenience.

“I’d like to see reminders sent at least 20 days before the badges expire and something there in the interim.”

Mrs Jardine added: “Without the badge, I wouldn’t get anywhere. I have to risk a fine or not go out.

“I’ve lost a lot of independence and I don’t want more taking away.”

Blue badges are classed as a benefit and are issued by local authorities on behalf of the Government.

A Darlington Borough Council spokeswoman said: “It is unfortunate this couple have found themselves in this difficult situation.

“However, the story does serve as a reminder to other blue badge holders that they will need to check the expiry date on their badge and take action in good time to renew it.”
