POLICE are urging adults not to supply underage drinkers with alcohol.

The warning comes after a woman was given a fixed penalty and fined £90 for buying alcohol for her 16-year-old daughter.

Spennymoor neighbourhood police team was alerted by staff at Asda supermarket in the town, at around 6pm on Saturday, September 6.

They reported seeing an adult buying alcopops and believed a youngster was waiting outside the store to receive them.

CCTV then captured the woman passing the drink to a girl in the car park.

Yesterday (Wednesday, September 17) PCSO Andy Grundy and PC Mark Pheasant visited the woman at her Spennymoor home and she admitted buying the drink for her daughter, though said it was intended to be consumed at home.

PCSO Andy Grundy said: “The girl was seen walking away with friends towards the Daisy Fields area.

“We’d urge all adults not buy alcohol for people under 18.

“We do a lot of work with licensees to prevent underage drinking, educating and enforcing, so it is frustrating when even parent buy alcohol for their children.

“Underage drinking can increase anti social behaviour which upsets people and puts more demand on police services and there are real health implications.”

Anyone convicted of a second offence of supplying alcohol to someone underage faced court action and a fine of up to £5,000.

Durham police is part of the multi-agency Operation Aries initiative to tackle underage drinking across the county with a series of measures.
