STUDENTS got a taste of Africa as a fundraising tour descended on a Darlington school.

The Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir hosted a series of dancing, drumming, singing and craft workshops for pupils at Hummersknott Academy, before performing a sell-out concert.

The Ugandan choir is taking part in a fundraising tour to raise money for homes and schools run by the Molly and Paul Child Care Foundation, which provides education, food, shelter and healthcare for orphaned and needy children in the Kampala and Masaka district.

Mike Fairless, head of music at the school, said: “We have been amazed by the energy of the choir and how they bring it out in our own students.

“It has been a fantastic day for Hummersknott Academy, the primary schools and those lucky enough to have heard the choir. They are making music and raising funds for a truly worthwhile cause.”

Pupils will also take part in a non-uniform day on Friday to raise money for the charity.

A school spokeswoman added: “Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with the choir members and hearing about their lives in Africa and how they differed from the lives of young people in this country.”

The choir will also perform at Sainsbury’s, in Victoria Road, from 11am to 3pm on Saturday (September 27).
