Frankie Pearson of Shakespeare Close, Darlington, admitted stealing £48 worth of coffee from the Sainsbury’s on Duke Street when he appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court onThursday (September 25).

The court heard that the 28-year-old had spent much of his adult life in and out of prison and struggled with depression, anxiety and a long-standing heroin addiction which was being treated with methadone.

He stole the coffee to buy drugs to help him deal with the news that his girlfriend was being sent to prison for four months.

Pearson, who was already serving a community sentence, was given a new six-month order with a 12-week drug rehabilitation requirement.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay £48 compensation.
