A MATHS graduate put fractions and algebra aside to help improve health and sanitation in rural India.

Emma Christian, from Trimdon Village, is volunteering in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu for three months as part of the International Citizen Service (ICS) Restless Development scheme.

The 22-year-old, who recently graduated from Lancaster University with a master degree in maths, is helping to educate children on personal hygiene and the importance of mosquito protection.

Improving toilet facilities in communities with poor provision is a major part of her role and the volunteers are planning a large rally to coincide with World Toilet Day on Wednesday, November 19.

Miss Christian said it had been a rewarding experience so far, adding: “The Restless Development programme mainly focuses on peer teaching projects. This means I'm working on projects aimed at people my own age, which definitely appealed to me.”

Miss Christian would like to thank her friends, family, and local businesses, including GT Group, Joslin Rhodes, Frontier Agriculture, DKD, Dryden Farms and Peregrine Finance and Livestock supplies, for donating more than £800 towards the project.
