A CHANCE meeting at a local dance led to 60 years of marital bliss for a Darlington couple.

Marjorie and Eric Marriott are set to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary, more than six decades after meeting as teenagers.

Though Mrs Marriott, 82, initially rejected the advances of her young suitor, Mr Marriott persisted and eventually won the hand of his sweetheart.

The couple settled in their hometown of Crook where Mr Marriott – now 83 – worked for the Wear Valley District Council and Mrs Marriott worked for decades as a tailor for the prestigious Sewell and Son company.

They went on to have one son, Andrew, who says regular squabbles help to keep his “inspirational” parents together.

He said: “There’s always a bit of a squabble between them but that’s what makes it work.

“They have been a great influence and have always been there for me.

“They make a great couple – I’ve been married 26 years now and they inspired me in that way.”

Mr and Mrs Marriott may have their disagreements but they both agree that it’s honesty and companionship that is at the heart of their long-lasting marriage.

Mr Marriott said: “She’s always shouting at me but she’s very helpful and generous and we must be doing something right if we’re still here 60 years later.”

Mrs Marriott added: “It’s been lovely and we do everything together – we used to go all over but now it’s mostly about companionship.

“He is kind, very caring and will do anything for anyone.”

The couple will celebrate their anniversary tomorrow (Thursday, October 16) and will continue the celebrations with a family trip to visit their granddaughter.
