VOLUNTEERS joined forces to tidy up Spennymoor town centre last weekend.
More than a dozen helpers, young and old, turned out to pick up litter on Saturday (October 21), despite grey skies and rain.
The group split off into teams to tackle separate areas and collectively filled more than 20 bin bags with rubbish.
The litter pick was organised by Spennymoor Area Action Partnership (AAP), who hope to make the litter pick a regular event.
Spennymoor AAP’s community project development officer, Peter Henderson, joined in with the litter pick on Saturday.
He said: “The litter in the town centre is an issue that is regularly brought up during Area Action Partnership meetings. It was suggested by a couple of our members that we organise a litter pick, and we are pleased it went really well.
“The atmosphere was fantastic and it was a really good, productive morning. The volunteers said it was a great experience and they were happy to make a difference to the town."
Mr Henderson added: “There are plans to do it again and make it a regular thing and we will continue to keep looking at how we can improve the area.”
