A WOMAN who sends parcels of treats to soldiers serving abroad has received a donation of goodies from her local supermarket.
Brenda Storey, from Trimdon Village, has been sending gifts to servicemen and women stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan for seven years, posting around six to ten parcels per week.
The 65-year-old originally worked alone but is now part of the Military Support and Welfare Group.
When Sainsbury’s in Sedgefield heard about Ms Storey’s efforts, the supermarket was keen to help and today (Thursday, October 30) staff handed over bulging shopping bags, packed full of sweets, crisps and toiletries.
Ms Storey said: “My son Richard is in the Royal Engineers and I started by sending parcels to him. He told me that some soldiers don’t have any family and don’t always receive gifts from home.
“It broke my heart, as they deserve some home comforts too.”
Jo Robinson, the store’s community ambassador, said: “We think what Brenda is doing is wonderful and we wanted her to get some recognition for it.
“It is such a great cause, especially with Christmas on the way.”
