PROUD pupils enjoyed taking part in the official opening of a football academy in their school.

Wolsingham School and Community College opened its doors to a new Martin Gray Football Academy for the first time today (Thursday, November 20), unveiling smart new kits and the squad of 50 promising footballers.

Headteacher Deborah Merrett said: "This is a great way to continue building on our year-on-year improvements. It is an excellent opportunity for our pupils to develop not only their sporting skills, but their social and life skills.

“The pupils are wearing their new kit with pride and we are very thankful to everyone who has made this possible, including Councillor Anita Savory.”

Mr Gray added: “I wanted to bring more opportunities to Weardale and I’ve been very impressed by the pupils here, they’re all really enthusiastic and willing to learn and those are two important factors.”

15-year-old Jake McKellar has been selected to join the elite squad. He said: “It’s great to have such a good opportunity for younger people to play football.

“I’m proud that the academy has a base here in our school, it’s good for us, but also for Weardale as a whole.”
