A NORTH-EAST pub is looking to attract new customers by adding an unusual delight to its menu – afternoon tea.

The Tuns, in Sadberge, near Darlington, served its first afternoon teas to customers on Tuesday, ahead of the pub’s first anniversary of new management, on December 5.

The Tuns is a family-run pub, with Ross Serino at its head, along with mum Barbara, and partner Rebecca.

This latest offering is far from traditional pub grub though, and, with its 35-seat dining room, Mr Serino and his family are clearly taking their food seriously.

The initial idea to serve afternoon tea came from chef Helen Todd’s past experience in a tea room, paired with strong interest from regular visitors.

Mr Serino said: “We’ve had a lot of interest from a variety of people. People like to go out and talk to each other over a long period of time, and it’s nice to have a few snacks while you do it.”

Anyone thinking that the pub is going to be replacing the bar staff for baristas shouldn’t worry though, as ales and wine are still very much available.

The centuries-old building is currently entering a busy period, with the launch of the Christmas menu and numerous events coming up, including live music on the final three Sundays in December.

The Tuns is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Afternoon tea is from £13.95 per person. Booking is required in advance. Call 01325-332080
