MARKET traders are being offered rent free pitches over the Christmas period in Ferryhill to try to attract new businesses.
Ferryhill Town Council is concerned about the decline of markets generally and so it is acting to help preserve the town’s set up.
The authority fears that competition from superstores, retail parks and online shopping are some of the reasons behind the problem.
To try to rectify the problem and to encourage new traders the council is offering the last two weeks in December and the first two weeks in January rent free to traders.
The stalls will be based in the market place near to the town council’s offices in the centre of the town.
It is hoped that the rent free offer will help to attract new traders to the town who will stay beyond the four week scheme.
Residents of Ferryhill are being urged to support the traders during the free rent period.
Details on the free pitches offer can be obtained from the town council’s market manager John Rogerson on 01740-652157.
