A SMALL grants fund is starting to benefit youngsters in the Newton Aycliffe area and more groups are being encouraged to apply.

Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership (Gamp) and the Pioneering Care Partnership launched the Small Grants Fund for Children and Young People last November.

Groups and organisations in the Newton Aycliffe and Middridge area were invited to apply for grants of between £500 and £1,000 to fund projects to improve the lifestyle, wellbeing and social inclusion of young people.

The overall aim of the project is to provide support for groups to organise activities they would not normally be able to finance.

To date, eight groups have received funding, including Newton Aycliffe Youth Football Club, which received £600 towards the cost of supporting 16 coaches through a Durham Football Association course.

‘Berni Borsberry, club secretary, said: “The funding will help increase the skills of our coaches and in turn benefit the 200 plus young people who play for the club.”

Brian Riley, Gamp coordinator, said: “A key priority for GAMP is to help support the local community and voluntary sector.

“It is anticipated that a significant number of local groups will be able to develop projects that benefit young people thanks to this funding.”

Charities, community groups and non-profit organisations can still apply for funding.

Projects that increase physical activity, improve health and wellbeing, boost self esteem, increase social interaction and increase the levels of trained volunteers are especially welcome.
