DARLINGTON'S mayor took on an eggy challenge this afternoon as he pitted his wits in an omelette making contest against the town's Youth MP.

Darlington College hosted the three egg Omelette Challenge in the first in a series of battles between students, staff and special guests ahead of a special Hell's Kitchen event next month.

Following a masterclass from Lee Couttes, catering programme leader, Councillor Lee, 68, who represents Heighington and Coniscliffe, grasped the whisk first, managing a respectable if slightly singed and over-seasoned dish.

Danny Brown, 14, from Longfield Academy, Darlington, who was elected to represent the town's young people on the national stage last year, produced a more visually appealing creation and said he was "egg-static" with the result.

He said: “It could have gone better but I don’t think any amount of practice could have prepared me for this.”

Cllr Lee, who has been keen to promote the good work of Darlington’s young people during his term of office, added: “Good food is linked to good health and exercise. All three together are critical for all young people to become involved with.”

The Omelette Challenge breaks its last egg on February 26 when Hell’s Kitchen will be staged at the college and the winner announced.
