A MATURE student is encouraging others to follow in her footsteps after launching her first jewellery collection with a major chain.

The stylish designs of Darlington woman Ruth Hallows are currently being sold in Argos shops across the country after the 32-year-old won a competition at Birmingham City University.

Ms Hallows created her Pearl Swirl collection while in her first year of a jewellery making degree.

She said: “It was really exciting to win the competition and it’s been a fantastic experience – it’s amazing to think so many people have seen my designs.

“I started drawing the swirls and patterns I saw in nature and made them 3D, I love the finished collection and gave pieces to everyone as presents.”

The mature student added: “I’ve loved designing and improving my skills at uni and I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity – everyone I’ve worked with has been so supportive.”

She added: “I want to tell everyone how great it is going to uni, I went later in life and I’d encourage anyone to do it.

“I’ve had so many opportunities and being older it’s easier to knuckle down and make the most of your time.”

Alice Rigby, jewellery buying manager for Argos, said: “Ruth’s designs really did blow us away and it’s fantastic that she can now reach millions of people.”
