A TEENAGER has hope for the future thanks to Darlington’s newest hub for learning and skills.

Future computer game designer Connor Wright is a step closer to his dreams after netting a college place.

The 16-year-old credits Darlington Borough Council’s Learning and Skills service with giving him the chance at a new future.

After ill health meant he was unable to sit GCSEs at school, Connor studied several subjects through the service, which offers training and education for people of all ages.

Its newly refurbished centre for young people, based on Tubwell Row, was officially opened by Councillor Cyndi Hughes today (Monday, March 16).

Connor, along with sisters Mary-Kate and Bridget Welsh, helped to design the colourful artwork in the centre.

He said: “I was very unhappy when I couldn’t do the GCSEs and felt scared about the future.

“I came here and made lots of friends, I get along with everyone and I’m really happy.

“My life’s a lot better and my skills have improved a lot – I know designing computer games is very hard but I’ve made it my goal.”

Cllr Hughes, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “We need to make sure young people start life with the skills, qualifications and attributes they need to make a success of their lives.

“Never before has it been as important as it is today for a young person to build a good level of skills, for that young person, for the economy and for society.”
