YOUNGSTERS are being encouraged to get active this Easter by taking part in a series of sporty activities.

Durham County Council has organised “four fantastic days of fun” at its leisure centres in Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe, which are sure to get children’s pulses racing.

Children can choose between football, cricket, futsal and tennis at the events, which take place during the Easter holidays.

On Tuesday, March 31, a junior indoor football tournament will kick off the fun from 10am until 4pm at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre.

This will be followed by an all star futsal tournament for those over 14 at Spennymoor Leisure Centre on Wednesday, April 1, from 1pm to 5pm.

A week later, on Wednesday, April 8, there will be a tennis training camp for youngsters aged eight to 14 at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre from 10am to 4pm.

A junior cricket fun camp will round off the fun on Thursday, April 9, from 1pm to 5pm at Spennymoor Leisure Centure.

All of the sessions will be delivered by Durham County Council’s sports development team with support from staff at both leisure centres.

John Walker, sports development officer at the council, said: “What could be better than an Easter holiday full of sports for boys and girls which provide both training sessions and competition?”

The sessions aim to build on the success of similar activities which took place during the February half term holidays and saw 319 young people take part.
