A WOMAN who left her daughter with a head wound after throwing a metal drinks coaster at her has been fined.

Beverley Duffy, of Gurney Street, Darlington, was at home with her grown-up daughter when the argument broke out at 9.30pm on March 20.

Joanne Hesse, prosecuting at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court, said the argument had started as a result of 43-year-old Duffy’s drinking.

“All of a sudden, she [the daughter] was hit in the side of her head by something,” she said.

“She felt dizzy at first and could feel blood pouring down the side of her face. When she looked down there was a metal drinks coaster.

“As soon as her mother saw the blood, she just ran out of the house without saying anything.”

Her daughter was left with an inch-and-a-half cut on her temple, which was treated by paramedics.

The court heard Duffy was extremely remorseful following the incident, and had called the police herself after leaving the property.

She claimed her daughter had thrown the coaster first, but this was not accepted by the prosecution.

Duffy pleaded guilty to assault and possession of a class B drug – cannabis – which she admitted was for her own personal use.

She was fined £74 and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
