A DISBANDED residents’ group has donated the remaining £1,500 in its coffers to support the lifesaving work of two local charities.

Sedgefield Residents’ Federation folded last year owing to falling membership but it was determined to do one last good deed before calling it a day.

The group decided to donate its remaining reserves to charity and, after holding a vote, split the money between the Great North Air Ambulance Service and Northumbria Blood Bikes.

Yesterday (Monday, April 20), members handed over a cheque for £1,000 to the former and £500 to the latter, a charity which delivers urgent blood and medical supplies out of hours between the region’s hospitals.

Christine Hall, former chairman and secretary, said: “The air ambulance does such amazing work and we wanted to give something back. We had also heard about the blood bikes and were keen to support them too.”

Sedgefield Residents’ Federation was formed in 2000 and represented the Sedgefield borough.

Membership fell following the introduction of the unitary authority in 2009 and the County Durham Residents’ Association which encompassed the whole county.

Its next meeting takes place at Durham Methodist Church in North Road, Durham City, on Wednesday, May 13 at 10am.
