A JAMAICAN singer given a new lease of life by Darlington’s close knit arts scene is urging others to support it.

Latoya Black is making a name for herself around the town with her strong vocals and assured performances attracting critical acclaim.

The 24-year-old drew strong praise for her recent spell as Motormouth Mabel in Darlington Operatic Society’s (DOS) production of musical favourite Hairspray.

She is now calling on people to support local arts groups as they supported her as she settled into the town.

Ms Black came to Darlington from Jamaica five years ago, joining family members already living in the town.

She said members of the local operatic society had become like family to her as she navigated an unfamiliar culture.

She said: “The theatre is not a big thing in Jamaica so I’d never been on stage before but DOS were looking for a black singer, I signed up and ended up in Hairspray.

“The society provided a family atmosphere and helped me settle in Darlington.

“It means so much to me and it was amazing to perform in front of hundreds of people and be supported by everyone.

“Having groups like this is such a big help to people who come here knowing nobody at all – you end up with friends of all ages and backgrounds.

“I love living in Darlington, the people are lovely and always smiling and friendly – I haven’t faced any negativity.”

Ms Black’s next performance will be at the Model T’s charity day, taking place on Saturday, May 30.
