A DARLINGTON woman has welcomed a project aiming to deliver digital skills training to those with sight or hearing loss.

The national Online Today project will provide about 5,000 people with sensory loss with vital training.

The scheme will help those with hearing or sight loss overcome barriers they may face getting online or dealing with technology.

While internet use is increasing significantly across the UK, those with sensory loss can face many challenges when navigating the digital world.

The new scheme, led by the RNIB, will use a series of workshops, surgeries and one-to-one sessions to equip people with the skills to comfortably use the internet, smartphones, tablets and computers.

Partially sighted Darlington resident Rosie Pybus said: “Having a firm grip of technology can open up a whole new world to blind and partially sighted people thanks to a range of more portable and affordable devices.

“The wonders of the internet can be a great benefit in learning, employment, keeping in touch with friends and online shopping.”

Neil Heslop, managing director of RNIB Solutions, said: “Technology has changed the way we live our lives, from how we communicate and socialise to the way we look for jobs and pay our bills.

“For people who have hearing or sight loss, being able to get online can make a huge difference to being able to live independently but it can be quite daunting if you don’t know where to start.”

Online Today is open to anyone who has sight or hearing loss.
