A WETHERSPOONS pub has been named the best in a city at an annual awards.
The Bishops’ Mill, on Walkergate, picked up the best bar and overall prizes at the Best Bar None awards, held at Ramside Hall Hotel on Wednesday night.
The awards are aimed at cutting crime and disorder in Durham by honouring responsible and safe venue operators.
Pizza Express won best restaurant, Loveshack was named best nightclub and the John Duck picked up the best pub prize.
Durham Police chief constable Mike Barton said: “Since Best Bar None began in 2007 we have seen violent assaults fall by more than 20 per cent in Durham city centre, an achievement which is absolutely magnificent and a real testament to all those involved.
“The introduction of extra points for attending Pubwatch meetings gave added weight to the outcome of this year’s awards and the judging was the closest it’s ever been.
“Deliberations went into the early hours but for the first time ever the outcome across all categories was unanimous.”
The scheme is run under the Durham City Nightsafe Initiative, supported by the police, Durham County Council and others.
The awards were presented by Councillor John Robinson, chairman of Durham County Council.
