WORK is to begin on creating a new 300-job superstore in May.

Morrisons won planning permission to open a new 6,000sq metre food store at Durham City Retail Park, in Dragonville, Durham City, in October and hopes to be open by next Christmas.

Now the retail giant has announced it will begin converting part of the existing B&Q store in May.

The B&Q is to remain open, in part of its existing premises, covering around 5,000sq metres. None of the 115 workers at the DIY outlet are at risk of losing their job.

Richard Haynes, Morrisons’ development executive, said: “This exciting news marks the next step in bringing our unique fresh food offer to Durham as soon as possible.

“We are delighted with the support we have received from local residents and the council for our plans, and look forward to opening the new store in time for Christmas.”

There is already a large Tesco Extra superstore in the area and Asda hopes to open a large store, petrol station and large car park on nearby Dragon Lane, creating up to 400 full- and part-time jobs.

Asda has submitted a planning application and a decision is expected within the next month.

Concerns have been raised over the impact two new superstores would have on traffic and congestion in the area.

Recruitment for the Morrisons jobs will begin in late summer.
