POLICE have renewed their appeal for information on an armed robbery at a city newsagent.

Two young men burst into J&L News on Willowtree Avenue, on High Grange Estate, Durham City, at about 4pm on Wednesday, February 4 and threatened the lone female shop assistant with a knife.

Police say the weapon was a large knife but not a machete.

The pair got away with some cash from the till. The woman was unhurt, but shaken.

Three male teenagers, aged 15, 17 and 18, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Stephanie Bird, of Durham CID, said: “I would describe this robbery as an act of great cowardice, no doubt purposefully targeting the lone female victim in a quiet street where they knew they were unlikely to be challenged.

“The victim was remarkably brave and remained composed throughout the incident given what she was faced with.”

DS Bird thanked the public for its support on the investigation to date and renewed her appeal for people who live or work in the area to contact the police if they can assist in any way.

Anyone with information is asked to call Durham City CID on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
