A GREEN group is hoping to plot a map of all the allotments in County Durham to help gardeners find their nearest site.

Transition Durham hopes to collect and share information about the county’s allotments as part of a project to increase the number of people who grow their own food.

The group, which campaigns on environmental issues, is working with Durham County Council on the research.

Researcher Wilf Richards said: “Our online allotment map will enable gardeners to search for nearby allotment sites.

“We intend to include other useful information such as who owns the site and who to contact to rent an allotment.

“We'd like gardeners in County Durham to tell us about their local allotment so it can be included.

“Many allotment sites are privately owned and this is where your help is particularly needed as we would like to include these as well as council-owned sites.”

Initially, researchers are focusing on four areas: Durham City; Chester-le-Street; Crook and areas around Bishop Auckland including Howden-le-Wear, St Helen Auckland and Coundon; and the Consett and Burnopfield area.

Once gathered, information will be shared on durhamlocalfood.org.uk

Anyone who can help is asked to get in touch with the team by phoning Wilf Richards on 07906-439-084 or emailing wilf@durhamlocalfood.org.uk
