RESIDENTS can find out more about a new support service for people with learning disabilities tomorrow (Friday, February 20).

The Durham Hub, which supports people with learning disabilities live independent lives, started at Durham City Baptist Church, off Sunderland Road, Gilesgate, Durham, in December.

The service runs every weekday, but a first open day will be held tomorrow (Friday, February 20), from 10.30am to 2pm.

Gilesgate residents can find out about what the service offers and how its users, who are referred to the hub by their social worker, help with church activities and more.

Barbara Reynolds and Brenda Lines, from the Durham Hub, will answer questions.

The event will have a tackling hate crime theme, with Police Community Support Officer (PCOS) Sharon Bowman available to answer questions, police dogs Jet and Ben on hand and representatives of the fire brigade also in attendance.

Organisers stress there is very little hate crime in the area, but want to remain vigilant.

The next information day will have a health theme.

It is hoped further hubs might be established in Crook and Spennymoor.

Anyone interested is welcome to drop in to the hub any week day, from 9am to 3.30pm.
