A SMALL visitor attraction is to repeat a series of charity opening days on Saturdays during March.

Crook Hall and Gardens, in Sidegate, Durham, opened for the first time on Saturdays during March last year, dedicating the month to worthy causes.

The three events raised more than £500 and so a similar run is to be staged next month.

Visitors are invited to tour the historic hall, part of which dates from the medieval era, and take in an early season view of its six acres of surrounding themed gardens, which includes a maze.

During the three successive Saturdays they will be given information about the work of the charities concerned.

All admission charges will then be donated to the selected charity of the day.

The first, on March 7, is dedicated to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), which operates three helicopters throughout the year across the North-East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria.

The second Saturday opening is dedicated to Lifespan, a small local charity which supports people with serious and life-threatening illness, and to family members and friends who offer them care.

Durham County Council’s Inclusion and Achievement (SEND) Team is to benefit from the third and final day, on March 21.

It promotes inclusion and equality of opportunity for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

All open days will run between 11am and 3pm, with entrance fees of £5 for adults and £4.50 for concessions to be donated to the selected charity.

The hall’s courtyard cafe will be open to provide refreshments for visitors on all three Saturdays.
