THE consortium behind multi-million pound plans to turn a former mental hospital into student digs has named the firm that would run the accommodation.

If given planning permission to convert the former County Hospital, off North Road, Durham, Sladen Estates, Peveril Securities and Helios Properties would deploy Victoria Hall to manage the development.

The group said Victoria Hall managed more than 9,000 bed spaces across the UK and won an award for its quality student accommodation for the fourth consecutive year at last year’s National Student Housing Awards.

Ralph Jones, director of Peveril Securities, said: “As responsible developers, we want to ensure that the plans for the County Hospital are delivered in the right way.

“This is why we have secured the services of a first-class student management company with a proven track record in providing the best living environment for students and local residents in neighbouring areas.”

The plans to create 364 bedrooms have been widely unpopular. The scheme is slightly scaled back from an earlier version rejected by councillors last July.

It is expected to go before a Durham County Council planning committee shortly.
