LEADERS of a £31 million building project say theirs would be “unlike other student developments”.

Peveril Securities wants to create 363 student beds at the former County Hospital site, off North Road, Durham, by converting the 1850s-built former mental hospital into 82 studios, demolishing some later extensions and building two new blocks, comprising 281 flats.

The scheme has been scaled back slightly since last July, when a council planning committee overwhelmingly rejected a proposal for 398 beds.

Members of Durham County Council’s county planning committee will debate the issue on Tuesday (April 7) and their officers are recommending they grant planning permission.

Peveril Securities managing director Ralph Jones said: “Unlike other student development proposals, we want to deliver a safe and well-managed residential development that will cater for the housing needs of the city’s student population, without detriment to nearby residential areas.

“We hope that members will recognise the collective benefits of the scheme and support the planning officer’s recommendation to approve the plans when they are determined next week.”

The development would be managed by the Victoria Hall company. A Scout hut would be rebuilt as a student hub, with a gym and music room.

The developers have agreed to make a £30,000 contribution to the £3 million redevelopment of nearby Wharton Park.

However, many local residents are furious at the plans. There have been 130 objections, with critics including English Heritage, the Crossgate Community Partnership and three county councillors.

The planning committee will meet at County Hall, Durham, at 1pm. Also discussed will be plans to build 445 student beds at lower Claypath and homes and offices in Bowburn.
