A FREE financial literacy course is being offered by a housing association to help local people make the most of their money.
The six-week course covers issues such as using bank accounts, budgeting and getting the best energy deals and aims to prevent people from falling into financial difficulty.
Organised through Derwentside Homes’ Brighter Futures project, it is open to everyone but any of the landlord’s tenants completing the course will get £30 credit on their rent account.
Among those who have taken part is 23-year-old Caroline Stovold, of Burnopfield, who said: “The course was really interesting and made me think about hidden expenditures.
“I’ve started keeping a record of everything I spend and it’s really opened my eyes.
“I’ve discovered I can save hundreds of pounds a year just by making small changes like changing which supermarket I shop at, changing my phone contract and keeping track of the little spends such as the odd chocolate bar or drink which all add up”.
The next course takes place in September and more information is available from Michelle Graham on 01207 524205.
