DOG walkers raised hundreds of pounds to tackle the Ebola crisis by staging a “church crawl”.

Around 20 animal lovers took their pets on the circular three-mile walk around six churches in Durham City on Sunday.

The effort raised more than £500 for international medical aid charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

Andy Hughes, manager of three city centre pubs, said the plan came together over a few pints.

“One of our regulars at The Angel Inn helps out along with his mother at St Margaret’s Church and was looking to raise funds to help the Ebola crisis through MSF.

“The great news is that we have managed to raise over £500 to help in any way it can,” he said.

“It was really nice to take time to look at all the fabulous buildings in our city and to chat with pub regulars.

“What could be better than to have a chat with people while walking the dog and raising money for a very worthy cause.”

The effort ended at The Elm Tree, with drinks for the pets and their owners.
