SIXTH formers have been helping younger school pupils learn about foreign languages and cultures.
Students from Durham High School for Girls’ senior house upper sixth who have been working towards a Foreign Languages Leadership Award staged a foreign language learning morning today (Thursday, April 23).
Younger girls from years five and six enjoyed taster sessions on Japanese, Mandarin, Urdu, Italian and Persian, learning elements of the languages along with aspects the associated cultures such as food and dress.
At the end of the morning, the pupils performed or spoke in the language they had been learning.
Kath Anderson, from the school, said: “They had a wonderful time.
“They were filled with enthusiasm and wanted to learn more.”
Tomorrow (Friday), the school will turn its attention to the General Election, as students have the opportunity to put questions to parliamentary candidates for the City of Durham constituency.
Labour’s Roberta Blackman-Woods, the Conservatives’ Rebecca Coulson, Liberal Democrat Craig Martin and Jonathan Elmer from the Green Party are due to attend.
The event will be followed by a mock election in school next week.
