TWO charities held an event in Durham City over the weekend to reduce the risk of people suffering from strokes.

The Rotary Club of Durham held its annual Blood Pressure Day in the Market Place on Saturday along with the Stroke Association.

The aim was raise awareness of the risks of a stroke as a result of abnormal blood pressure.

The event enabled people to come in, enjoy a cup of tea and have their blood pressure measured by a professional, who can then advise them if any further action needs to be taken to prevent a stroke.

Martin Leake, the Rotary Club of Durham's community service chairman, said: “With the kind permission of St. Nicholas Church in the Market Place, we’ve been running this event for several years now and it always proves to be of great benefit to the people who attend.

“Last year, 29 people were advised to refer to their GP within one month, and four were advised to see their GP as soon as possible.

“Even if only one of these people can avoid a stroke as a result of our efforts, it will have been truly worthwhile.”
