Brass in abundance


BRASS Durham International Festival was launched by an escapologist.

David Straitjacket wowed crowds in Durham Market Place as he encouraged people to visit the festival with a stunt escaping from a straitjacket while bound in chains. Brass Durham International Festival runs from this Saturday, July 4, to Sunday, July 19, and presents a selection of music ranges from afro-beat, ambient, big band, Cajun, Celtic folk, classical, funk, gypsy, hip hop, jazz, salsa, ska, soul and traditional brass.

The headlining acts include Mnozil Brass (Austria), Jimi Tenor and Kabu Kabu (Finland / Africa), Femi Kuti and Positive Force (Nigeria), Jóhann Jóhannsson and Band (Iceland), Black Dyke Band (UK), Issie Barratt with the Voice of the North Jazz Orchestra featuring Steve Waterman (UK), La Bottine Sourriante (Canada), Big Chris Barber Band (UK), Byron Wallen (UK), the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (US) and Hot 8 (US).

Brass, organised by Durham County Council with support from Arts Council England North-East, will feature events all over the county, including Durham City, Bishop Auckland and Darlington.
