A PRIMARY school has created a Remembrance tribute with a difference by creating an outdoor art gallery of pupils’ work.

A public footpath next to Hurworth Primary School, in Hurworth, near Darlington, was transformed with hundreds of poppies alongside artwork, poetry and letters written by the pupils in the hope that local people would take the chance to enjoy it.

Children at the school have been studying the First World War for several weeks and after looking at examples of war poetry and letters, the children were asked to create their own work, as well as artwork on the theme.

Deputy headteacher John Dooris (CORRECT) said the standard of work was so high that the school decided to take the opportunity to share it with the village.

He added: “Usually we would use three or four pieces of the best work for a display but it was so good that we decided to create an outdoor gallery. We left a comments book for people to give their thoughts and many people have signed it saying that they are pleased to see the effort that the children have put it.

“The children really were very excited to give their work an airing like this and they were proud to show their parents at the end of the day.”
