WEEKLY Nordic walks are taking place across Darlington to help residents lead a healthier lifestyle.

Nordic walking involves walking with poles, similar to ski poles, and are led by experienced leaders from the council’s sports development team.

The poles help the upper body get a workout and the method burns up to 47 per cent more calories than normal walking.

Poles are provided for anyone taking part and Andy Scott, Darlington Council’s cabinet member leading on health, said: “Nordic walking gets you outdoors which is ideal at any time of the year but particularly over the winter when it is tempting to stay indoors and do very little.

“As the sessions are run by experienced leaders, anyone taking part can be sure of expert help and tips on getting the right technique and posture in no time.”

All the Nordic walking sessions start from the South Park clock tower and take place on Tuesdays at 10am to 11am with Age UK, Fridays 10am to 11am and Saturdays from 9.15am to 10.15am.

Booking is essential, contact the sports development team on 01325-254370 or e-mail adam.walker@darlington.gov.uk to secure your place.

Participants need to wear suitable clothing and flat footwear as sessions may involve grassy, muddy areas.
