A CHARITY has made an appeal for vintage items and gadgets to form part of a new memory cafe, designed to help people with dementia.
Age UK, based at Beaumont House, in Darlington, will launch the cafe on February 14 and need items from the 1940s and 1950s, which have been shown to stimulate the memory of those suffering from the illness.
The cafe will operate on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, starting at 10am.
Gillian Peel, chief executive officer of Age UK in Darlington, said: “There is evidence to show that as people lose short term memory and focus more upon their past they like to be surrounded by objects they were familiar with at an earlier stage in their lives – it can stimulate interest and generate memories for them.”
Items can be dropped off at Beaumont House at any time. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help out at the cafe can call 01325-362832.
