A COUNCIL is investigating a factory over claims of excessive noise.

The inquiry was launched after residents complained to Haughton West ward councillors David Lyonette, Andy Scott and Nick Wallis about JW Recycling, on the Albert Hill Industrial Estate, in Darlington.

Householders say noise at the factory, which overlooks the Rockwell River restoration scheme and housing in Springfield, is loud and intrusive and can go on into the evening.

The councillors are now seeking action from the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency.

People living in the area have previously complained about the factory's wood-chipping machine.

Councillor Scott, who lives about 150 yards from the factory, said: "The noise is significant. It is like a train going past.

"Residents continue to tell me that bits of wood and metal come out of this machine and into the public area.

"We want them only to work within specific times and make sure this machine is within noise tolerance levels."

Councillor Lyonette said: "We have been told by residents that the noise of a machine in the factory seems to be louder than ever, making it difficult to hear their televisions.

"It is also claimed that company staff are seen to be collecting items from outside the fence before leaving the operation.

"We have contacted officers at the town hall, and they have told us that the matter will be taken up with the company, and that the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency will also be contacted."

A Darlington Borough Council spokesman said: "We are working with the Environmental Agency and the Health and Safety Executive to try to find a solution to this situation. We are also talking to residents to try to determine the extent of the problem."

The factory was approached by The Northern Echo but did not wish to comment.
