MORE birds are being attracted to a village water park after volunteers put up nesting boxes.

Parish councillors and charity workers erected nine bird boxes and repaired existing ones at Middleton St George Water Park yesterday.

The water park, which is a former water pumping station, attracts a range of birds, including swans, pigeons and gulls.

It is hoped the boxes will be used by blue tits, robins, sparrows and other garden birds.

Middleton St George Parish Council vice-chairman Steve York headed the project, with help from environmental enterprise scheme Just the Job.

The work was carried out to coincide with the national Bird Nesting week.

Mr York said: "This is the right time of the year to be putting the nest boxes up.

"It will attract more people into the water park because it is a superb village amenity we have here.

"It is an absolute Aladdin's Cave when it comes to wildlife and it is on our doorstep."
