A POPULAR lollipop man, who has spent 13 years helping children in Darlington cross the road safely, has retired.

Jimmy Sykes has worked for Darlington Borough Council as a school crossing patrol officer since 1998, covering various crossing points.

Most recently he helped about 150 children at Abbey Infant School cross safely every morning and afternoon.

The school, in Cleveland Terrace, dedicated an assembly to him, where the youngsters thanked him by singing.

A collection among parents, governors, pupils and staff raised nearly £400 and he received several cards and presents from children and parents.

Also popular with man's best friend, Mr Sykes looked after passing dogs by always having a few dog treats in his pocket.

He said: "It's been a real pleasure to work here, the children have been wonderful and I will miss them all.

"I would like to thank my manager, Denise Caley, for all her help and support - she has been wonderful."

There will be no crossing patrol in Cleveland Terrace until the council appoints a new officer.

Anyone interested in becoming a crossing patrol officer is asked to call the council on 01325-388783.
