BRIGHT yellow and red bins have been placed across Darlington thismonth to help residents in the fight against scams that promise easy money.

Darlington Borough Council's trading standards team is supporting a national Office of Fair Trading campaign.

In the largest Scamnesty drive of its kind, bins will be left in several locations for people to drop in marketing scams.

They can also contact the trading standards department about scams received by email and telephone.

The bins will be placed at Crown Street Library, Cockerton library, Age UK Darlington, in Bradbury House, the town hall reception, and town hall customer services.

Councillor Steve Harker, cabinet member for health and leisure, said: "Scam mailings received by trading standards could be vital in gathering intelligence on the latest scams and in stopping the fraudsters from continuing to bring misery to thousands of vulnerable people each year.

"Sadly, in the current economic climate, many people may be more vulnerable to scams and their promises of easy money. The key message is if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
