Durham University has become the first university to be awarded English Lacrosse High Performance University status, which recognises the quantity and quality of universities’ lacrosse programmes. Quentin Sloper, Durham University’s head of sport, said: “We are committed to the development of lacrosse at all levels within the university and we are very excited to see the fruits of our success.”

CHARGES BROUGHT: A woman arrested after a van veered off the A690 between the Gilesgate roundabout and junction 62 (Carrville) of the A1(M) on Sunday, October 21, has been charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis and using a motor vehicle without third party insurance. She will appear before magistrates early in the new year.

UNEXPLAINED DEATH: A 57-year-old man has been arrested and is helping police with enquiries after an 86-year-old woman died suddenly at a house in Dorset Avenue, Hebburn, South Tyneside, on Monday. The man was known to the woman and police are not looking for anyone in connection with the death. Police say the death is currently unexplained and they are in the early stages of establishing a cause of death.

GOOD RESPONSE: Police investigating the murder of John Roberts, 32, who was found dead at his home in Park Terrace, Winlaton, Gateshead, on Sunday evening say they have had a good response from the local community. Mr Roberts died of serious head injuries. Police still want to speak to anyone who saw him between Thursday and Sunday. Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.

HOT SEAT: Sunderland University students have helped produce a 45-minute pilot episode of a new quiz show called Hot Seat. The pilot was produced for a UK broadcaster, which has not been named.
