THREE local schools have signed up to take part in an attempt to break the world record for the most people singing and signing simultaneously.

Pupils at Bowburn Junior School, in Bowburn, Durham Gilesgate Primary School, in Durham City, and Hetton Lyons Primary School, in Hetton-le-Hole, will take part in the record bid, organised by Sign Health, at 2.45pm on Wednesday, February 6.

The charity broke a previous record, of 94,489 singers and signers, last year when 114,277 children took part in its sign2sing 2012 event.

This year, it hopes to have more than 175,000 youngsters involved. Schools, colleges and nurseries are all invited to sign up.

Sign Health chief executive Steve Powell said more than 800 schools had signed up so far and he was delighted the three local schools were among them.

Digital resources including a free whiteboard app will be made available to all schools registering at sign2sing.org.uk Everyone taking part will be invited to make a £1 donation to the charity, which works to improve the mental and physical health and wellbeing of deaf people.
