PRIMARY school pupils will this morning (frid) be performing a lion dance at assembly with a dragon they have created to mark the Chinese New Year.

Children of Class 2 at New Brancepeth Primary School in New Brancepeth, near Durham, completed their dragon on Chinese New Year day yesterday.

Their teacher, Leona Purvis, said: "Our class has been making this all week, as part of Chinese-themed activities throughout the school."

They dragon’s head, with movable horns and sharp teeth, was made out of cardboard, while the children designed patterns to go across the back.

Five children will be performing the Lion Dance at assembly, accompanied by fellow pupils on drums and tambourines.

The 3m creation will go on display, along with Chinese lanterns and Mandarin calligraphy created by other classes in the school.
