VOLUNTEERS are needed to help a new community transport service to help older people in isolated areas of North Yorkshire.

A grant of almost £40,000 has been awarded to launch and fund a WRVS community transport service to work across the county.

The service, which will provide vital support to isolated older people, has been given the grant by the People’s Health Trust from money raised through the Health Lottery.

It will be based at the WRVS hub in Pickering and will support 350 older people to get out and about – to go shopping, to GP or hospital appointments or simply to meet up with friends.

The funding will mean volunteers, will be able to do 4,200 individual journeys over the course of a year.

The regional head of WRVS services, Sue Collins, said: “This transport service will provide a lifeline for many of the isolated residents in North Yorkshire and enable them to get out and about to run errands, continue shopping as they always have done, to attend important health appointments and most importantly to retain their independence.”

The WRVS is now calling for more volunteers for the transport scheme. For more information about the transport scheme or to find out about becoming a volunteer go to wrvs.org.uk or call 0845 600 5885.
